Window Treatment Trends—2021

January 5, 2021

Welcome to 2021! A new year means new beginnings. And with it come trends in home fashion which were born out of changes to the way we live, learn, work and play.

Here’s a look at this year’s top trends and what they mean for window treatments.

Enhanced Comfort and Warmth

Home life has become synonymous with nesting, as we look to enhance comfort and warmth from the place where we’re spending so much of our time.

Simple, snug materials like corduroy, boucle and brushed fabrics, which provide subtle texture without being tiresome, are taking a front seat. Chunky knits, velvets, plush piles and brushed yarns will all be key for creating softness and a sense of coziness.

Window treatments present another element for adding warmth and comfort to a space. Duette® Honeycomb Shades and Sonnette® Cellular Roller Shades, for example, help retain heat in the winter and in cooler climates, thanks to their cellular design. (That design also keeps hot air out in the summer.)

Depending on your fabric and color choice, both shade styles beautifully diffuse natural light, creating a soothing, peaceful feeling throughout your home.

Multifunctionality

As our homes have become more multifunctional—they’re now often the office, school and gym all rolled into one—flexibility within rooms has become more important than ever.

Window treatments that are multifunctional make sense for spaces that demand flexibility. The Duolite® operating system, for instance, combines a light-filtering and a room-darkening fabric into a single shade. With this two-in-one system, you can create the perfect balance of filtered light when you want it (virtual meetings or online classes), and privacy when you need it (relaxing at the end of the day).

Bringing the Outdoors In

Bunkering down at home has renewed an interest in bringing the outdoors in. Incorporating organic elements such as houseplants and natural light may reduce stress and blood pressure, while increasing productivity, creativity and feelings of wellbeing.

Woven wood shades are a perfect complement to this trend. Consider Provenance® Woven Wood Shades, which are crafted from natural woods, reeds, bamboo and grasses, for a nature-inspired window treatment. The weaving techniques used on these natural fibers minimize bowing, bending and breaking, ensuring a durable shade.

Sheers and shadings also complement bringing the outdoors in. These window treatments help deliver the therapeutic powers of natural light by diffusing and softening harsh sunlight. Silhouette® Window Shadings feature soft, adjustable S-shaped vanes that “float” between two sheer fabrics, while Pirouette® Window Shadings feature sculptural fabric vanes attached to a sheer backing. For large windows or sliding-glass doors, Luminette® Privacy Sheers are the ideal choice. This vertical option combines the softness of sheers with the drama of drapes.

Warm Minimalism

Maximalism—the concept of “more is more,” is on its way out. Say goodbye to interior design excess and welcome in the “less is more” approach of warm minimalism. Unlike traditional minimalism, warm minimalism doesn’t mean paring a room down to the bare basics, but rather, creating a sanctuary using warm hues, textures, layers and soothing curves.

Solid roller shades paired with patterned side panels lend themselves well to this trend. And Sonnette® Cellular Roller Shades, with their soft, subtle curves, align with the smooth, round furniture inherent in warm minimalism.

Environmentally Responsible Materials

As the concern for the future of our planet becomes more urgent, the demand for recycled and repurposed materials continues to increase. Repurposed and recycled materials can add personality and work as a design focal point, while making you feel as good as they look. Plus, they pair well with responsibly sourced items such as sustainably harvested wood chairs and natural materials, like cork.

Window-treatment manufacturers are following this path of environmental responsibility, with many offering options made from repurposed or recycled materials.

GreenScreen® Sea-Tex™ screen shade fabric, for example, is made from reclaimed ocean plastic. Exclusive to the Hunter Douglas Designer Screen Shades line, these shades are available in five neutral tones (hues which also speak to the warm minimalism trend).

Smart-Home Technology

Smart-home technology continues to grow, as adding smarts to a home can make our lives more convenient (smart appliances), help us save energy (smart thermostats), and give us peace of mind (smart door locks). Smart-home tech also provides no-touch, hands-free control—a feature that took on a sense of new importance this past year. Check out our latest 2022 Window Treatment guide.

Automated window shades, which you can control with an app on your smart device or your voice, check off all those boxes. Save time by not having to run around adjusting shades throughout the day, make your home look lived in when you’re not there, and help save energy by blocking or letting light in depending on the time of day.

You can do all of that with PowerView® Automation. Enjoy the benefits of natural light control, coupled with the advantages of smart technology. Schedule your shades to automatically close at dusk, use your voice to open your kitchen shades halfway during your morning coffee—the possibilities for using PowerView for the way you live are almost endless.
