Cut-Out Window Treatments

Cut-outs provide an opportunity to cover windows and doors with unique architectural elements. Cut-out window treatments are suggested for clearance around obstructions such as door handles, window cranks and window air conditioners.

Duette® Honeycomb Shades and Applause® Honeycomb Shades offer bottom, left- or right-side cut-outs. They have the industry’s largest collection of fabrics to choose from, and can easily accommodate windows with cranks, levers or handles—also known as casement windows. These shades also work well on doors with windows that receive lots of sunlight (such as west-facing double doors), because their honeycomb design makes them extremely energy efficient.

Shutters are perhaps the most common window treatment used when cut-outs are needed. Heritance® Hardwood Shutters, Palm Beach Polysatin Shutters and NewStyle® Hybrid Shutters (shown above) cut-outs are specifically designed to provide clearance for French door handles. NewStyle shutters, for example, are available in a 5” curved cut-out with offset (meaning there is more room for your hand when it pushes on the door handle), a 3 ½” curved cut-out, a 3 ½” curved cut-out with offset, and a rectangular cut-out.

As with all specialty shapes, you should consult with your local Hunter Douglas specialist when deciding which product will work best for your windows and doors.
